About the Author

Hojo Tsukasa is the author of both City Hunter and Angel Heart . Born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1959, Hojo first burst on the scene by winning the 18th Annual Tezuka Award (1979), a contest sponsored by publishing house Shueisha promoting new manga writers.

He made his debut a year later with the manga Cat’s Eye , a story of three young, beautiful art thief sisters and the cop after their tails (no pun intended). He’s in love with one of the thieves, but totally unaware that she is the exact person he is pursuing. Much of the action centers around the Cat’s Eye cafe, a coffee house run by the sisters. It’s much like the later City Hunter ; lots of glamorous beautiful women, clueless libidinal men, and high-flung action. Cat’s Eye was also made into an anime in the early ’80s, and enjoyed a 70+ episode run.

Other titles that Hojo has written are Komorebi no Moto de , a gentle, heartfelt manga about a young boy and his relationship with a mysterious girl who can converse with trees (it’s not as corny as it sounds); Rash!! , about a set-upon cop and a mysterious beauty with a secret; and the absolutely hilarious, cross-gendered, cross-dressing love comedy Family Compo (F.COMPO).

Hojo is renowned for his wonderful art style (he’s one of the best figure artists working in manga today), and many former assistants of his have gone on to become well-respected manga artists in their own right – Inoue Takehiko , best known for the basketball manga Slam Dunk , and Umezawa Haruto , with his series Hallelujah II BØY .
