Synopsis: A nephew of a missing wealthy explorer seeks Ryo’s services to protect him from his aunt who seeks to obtain his uncle’s fortune. However, the young nephew begins to have feelings of affection for Kaori.

Kaori meanwhile, is using this opportunity to see how Ryo reacts to the presence of a “rival”

Saori Murakoshi is a talented author who’s dream was to have her original work published, She is visited by some men in suits demanding she finish the next novel.  Her first novel was a best-seller, unfortunately it was not under her name but instead under Mutsumi Kurowada who is the president of the publishing company.

Using henchmen to do his dirty work, Mutsumi does all he can to steal Saori’s next novel. Luckily Yuka the little girl who is Saori’s biggest fan calls Ryo to come and protect Saori from the thugs and offers to pay Ryo 500 Yen for his services.

Ryo eventually accepts the offer and helps Saori fulfill her dream of getting her first novel published in her name.

The new version from the television broadcaster SBS re-imagines manga’s setting of Tokyo in the late 1980s as Seoul in 2011. Lee will play a former CIA operative who now works as a gun-for-hire.

In 2008, the American company Fox Television Studios signed a tentative agreement to co-produce and distribute a joint Korean-Japanese live-action adaptation of the manga, although no further developments in that effort has since been announced. Another Korean actor, Jung Woo-sung, had been previously attached to that earlier, proposed live-action version. Another Asian star, Hong Kong martial artist Jackie Chan, played Saeba in a loose 1992 live-action Hong Kong adaptation of City Hunter. Coincidentally, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment distributes this 1992 City Hunter film in North America.

Umibozu and Kaori say close to Ryo to make sure he does not hit on Maki. Maki has her suspicions that Umibozu is her daddy longlegs and not Ryo. Maki constantly remembers the silhouette of Umibozu and his broad shoulders… Ryo warns Maki of Snake who is trying to assassinate her as she gazes at the full moon. Maki then mentions to Ryo about Umibozu’s presence makes her reminisce of her father.

Maki asks Umibozu who is targeting her? and Umibozu puts the blame on Ryo, saying that “a lady deceived by that playboy Saeba is getting her revenge” . Ryo was eaves dropping and rushed out to defend himself against the accusations. Umibozu then exclaims that he was “just kidding” and turns tomato red in the face haha.

At Maki’s concert Snake tries to sniper Maki as she performs but is foiled by Umibozu wielding a slingshot, Snake then lures Umibozu to the roof where he had set up a trap for Umibozu to fall on. We find out that Umibozu’s Achilles heel is pussy cats. Ryo absolutely wets himself with laughter when he finds this out.

From the looks of things it will definately been released 2010 but when exactly? Who knows?

I read an interesting article on AnimeNation – “Could City Hunter earn an American Resurgence“  and below are some of the interesting quotes from the article

“City Hunter has never really caught on in America”

But according to my visitors stats to my site a large majority are from America.

“That’s not to say that the upcoming live action television series has no potential.”

Yes we all hope so too!

“(although, granted, Jackie Chan’s City Hunter movie isn’t especially good, and while Madam City Hunter is a respectable action film, it has very little relation to creator Hojo Tsukasa’s original City Hunter.)”

Even though I do love Jackie Chan’s movies, I do agree that he wasn’t a very good Ryo. He focused way too much on being funny and the outcome was way too over the top.

“It’s a lighthearted action series that typically concentrates more on character personalities and situational comedy than serious, exhilarating action. That’s precisely what may make a live action television series adaptation successful and attractive to mainstream American television viewers.”

“While City Hunter isn’t an especially dated anime, it still can’t overcome the American stigma of being an old anime in an American market that typically avoids anime produced before 1990.”

With the evolving toys, gadgets, cars and not to mention pretty women, I’m sure there is a combination that will win our hearts! Can you imagine Ryo in one of those new Mini Cooper S with JCW kits? Come on who wouldn’t love that??

“I’d be very pleased to see the upcoming live action City Hunter television series spark a revitalization for the earlier anime and manga, but I don’t anticipate that occurring. I think that the City Hunter franchise has proven itself to be a title that doesn’t quite inspire the enthusiasm of average Americans.”

With fingers cross we all hope that the producers will get the chemistry right and make a series that will be appreciated by all audience types!
